When people think of socks, they picture the final product - neatly shaped, vibrant, and ready to wear. But behind every pair of custom Sockrates socks is a critical step that often goes unnoticed: steaming.
This little-known process is one of the most important (and least talked about) phases of sock production. It’s what transforms freshly knitted socks - loose, shapeless, and straight off the machine - into the polished, perfectly formed pairs you’ve come to expect from Sockrates.
From Knitted Chaos to Foot-Ready Form

When socks first come off the knitting machines, they’re in a raw state. They haven’t been shaped, and they’re closer in size to their maximum stretch - think long, limp tubes. That’s where the steaming step comes in.
We use a specially designed carousel-style ironing machine lined with metal foot molds (called blanks). Each blank represents the ideal foot shape for a sock. One by one, a technician carefully pulls each sock onto a blank as the carousel slowly turns.
As the socks make their way around the track, they eventually enter a steam oven - a hot chamber that heats the metal blanks and surrounds them with steam. This crucial step serves two powerful purposes:
- Shaping the Sock
The steam and heat gently mold the sock around the foot blank, smoothing out wrinkles and giving the sock a clean, professional finish.
- Enhancing Fit & Flexibility
The heat also causes the fibers to shrink slightly. Remember, the freshly knit sock is close to its largest possible size. By shrinking it, we create more stretch potential - meaning the sock can now comfortably fit a wider range of foot sizes, from smaller feet all the way up to larger ones.
Why Steaming Matters at Sockrates

At Sockrates, we're not just about custom designs - we care deeply about quality, efficiency, and sustainability. Incorporating steaming into our production process gives us a big win on all three fronts:
- A Better Fit for More Feet
Our socks can now adapt to a broader range of sizes without compromising comfort or stretch.
- Less Waste, More Efficiency
Traditionally, socks are softened and shaped using a "soft wash" process - large drums filled with water and detergent. Not only does this method require a high volume of socks to be efficient, but it also uses a lot of water and energy. That’s not a great fit for a bespoke sock company like ours.
- Custom-Ready, Always
Because we work in smaller, custom batches, the steaming method allows us to stay agile without needing massive loads for washing cycles. It's faster, cleaner, and more precise - just like our socks.
The Science of Perfection

We spent significant time fine-tuning this method - sourcing the right foot blanks, experimenting with materials, and dialling in the perfect temperatures and steam settings. The result? A process that supports our commitment to sustainable production, custom craftsmanship, and premium quality.
At Sockrates, every sock tells a story - and now you know the secret chapter that helps make each pair perfect. Steaming might be behind the scenes, but it’s centerstage in how we ensure your socks are as comfortable, durable, and versatile as they are good-looking.
